What equipment comes with the Overland Camping Car?
The most common feedback is “you have thought of everything!”
Unlike anywhere else, we take extra pride in planning, design and product quality to enhance your total experience.
All rentals include; roof top tents, seasonal bedding, shade/awnings, fridges, camping chairs, tables, lights, speakers, gas stoves, Italian coffee set, pots/pans, chefs knives, cutting boards, cutlery and everything you need to cook (lighters, salt, pepper, olive oil, aluminium foil etc)
A sub battery system — electricity to charge your phones, drones, laptops, cameras or operate a hairdryer.
A cleaning set, wet wipes and paper towels are all included.
There is a lot more to mention. Each camping car has hand selected products, so please check each car page for more details of what’s included.
I have a driver’s license from another country, can I rent an Overland Camping Car?
YES, there are 2 methods and you can find the details here: https://english.jaf.or.jp/driving-in-japan/drive-in-japan
In short, the most common method is by obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. These are commonly issued in your home country and must be presented together with a valid drivers license and passport for driving in Japan.
Alternatively, if you have a driver’s license issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, by following the requirements to obtain a Japanese translation of your license, you will be allowed to drive in Japan together with your valid original license and passport.
** Please Note
The expiration date of an international driver’s license is one year from the date of issuance, and the expiration date of driving in Japan is one year from the date of landing in Japan. There is a common trap for foreigners continuously residing in Japan for more than one year where the IDP becomes invalid and they must obtain a local Japanese drivers license to rent a camping car.
Driving with an international driver’s license obtained in a member country of the Paris Convention (1926), Washington Convention (1943), and Vienna Convention (1968) is not permitted in Japan.
Where can I park and sleep in the Overland Camping Car overnight?
The beauty of traveling in an Overland camping car is the freedom it gives you to get off the beaten path and find camping on the fly. We love hearing about new places and secret spots from our customers!
Ninja Camping / Nature Parking / Wild Camping — free nature spots and free parking sites along rivers, oceans, mountains found all over Japan. Legally you can generally park and sleep just about anywhere. The basic rule: if you see other people doing it, it is probably okay.
Auto Camping and Camp Sites — there are more than 1,000 auto camp sites throughout Japan. Google maps can be your best friend. Many camp sites require booking in advance, especially during national holidays and long weekends in the summer.
Roadside stations (Michi-no-eki 道の駅) — parking and resting facilities with large free parking areas and clean 24-hour restrooms. Parking and sleeping is usually okay but the general rule is one night only. No tables or chairs outside your camper, no fires.
Service Area / Parking Area — rest facilities on expressways with 24-hour restrooms. You may take a nap, but generally shouldn’t use the facility for overnight stay.
